History
Falkland Court sits on the former site of the Somerton Radio Station. When Somerton station opened in 1927 it was in the vanguard of technological advancement. It had its own electrical generating plant and electrical lighting. This was 3 years before electrical power was laid on in Somerton itself. At its height the site covered 600 acres mostly with aerials and masts and was the best receiving station in the region.Somerton Radio station was considered strategically important as a receiving station for radio communications from America and was included in the 'Emergency Arrangements' for the Telegraph Communications between the UK and the United States, 1940.
Advances in technologies in the 80's made the station obsolete leading to the closure of all stations, Somerton being the last to close in 2000.
We hold further information on the history of the station and would be delighted to share this with any viewer.
